“Reminiscing the Unknown Masters” is the fourth album by the Argentinian-Spanish pianist and composer Sebastián Chames.

Like his previous albums, it was recorded in New York with an outstanding line-up of musicians who embody the essence of the New York Hard-Bop scene: Steve Nelson, one the most renowned vibraphonists of the last three decades, has been a member of Mulgrew Miller´s and Dave Holland´s bands and played with Grant Green and Kenny Barron, among others; Curtis Lundy on double bass has worked with legends such as Betty Carter, Johnny Griffin and Pharoah Sanders.  Additionally, the record features Greg Tardy on tenor sax and drummer Willie Jones III, both of whom have collaborated with Chames for years. Tardy has played for nearly a decade with Elvin Jones and Andrew Hill, has twelve albums as a leader, and has just made a duo recording with Bill Frisell. Jones III has played for years in the bands of Cedar Walton and Roy Hargrove, and also played with Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Hank Jones and Horace Silver, among others. He has seven albums as a leader and has his own record label WJ3.

Reminiscing the Unknown Masters” includes ten compositions, five of which are Chames originals: “Missing File in Abuja”, “Adrián The Tiger”, dedicated to his youngest son, “Broken Swing”, written for the pianist Andrew Hill, “Non-Binding (Means a Lot)”, and “The Landing”. Also included are two arrangements of the well-known standards, “Every Time We Say Goodbye” by Cole Porter and “Laura” by David Raksin (main theme of the Otto Preminger film of the same title). In addition, there are the compositions “Hidden Light” and “Blues All the Time”, written respectively by Greg Tardy and Steve Nelson, which have been performed during their recent performances with Sebastián Chames in Spain. Also included is the composition by Curtis Lundy entitled “A Brighter Day”, which closes the album.

Chames’ works have received praise from audiences and the press, which has said: “One of the pillars of new Spanish Jazz(ABC); “Chames knows more than anyone how to create an atmosphere…” (El Pais); “Tradition and innovation are together in Sebastián Chames’ Jazz” (El Mundo).

The album was presented for the first time in Madrid at Bogui Jazz Club, later at Smalls Jazz Club in New York and last March in Washington DC at the Spanish Embassy. This summer Chames will be performing the music of this album at several venues around Spain.
